This is the part of Canada I think of as home - not the Rocky Mountains they show you in the brochures, I’m afraid. Just north of Toronto, on the Great Lakes, lies this wild landscape of granite, pine and fresh, clear water. (Or, as my friends The Arrogant Worms put it, “we’ve got rocks, and trees, and trees, and rocks, and rocks, and trees, and…water.” Ah, the nationalistic pride.) It’s basically only open for enjoyment in the summer - July & August, primarily - as for half the year the lake freezes, then there’s a month or two of waiting for it to thaw, and eventually it gets warm enough to swim. And everybody rushes up there for the summer, so the traffic is atrocious! It’s hard to explain the sheer size of Georgian Bay to New Zealanders back home, but think of it this way: if you add up the five Great Lakes - Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario - they’re roughly the same size as THIS COUNTRY. So…that’s a lotta water. Georgian Bay is just a part of Lake Huron, but even it’s far too big to see the other side!
